While much of the media continues to focus on the election of Barack Obama, the cholera crisis in Zimbabwe is now in its sixth month. United Nations’ health workers say there has been a sharp rise in the number of cholera cases in Zimbabwe and the death toll is nearing 3,000 men, women and children. The workers say that 2,817 new cases were reported last Monday -- taking the cumulative number of infections since the outbreak began to 56,123. (Our blog entry of 12/09/08 had said that officials were fearing as many as 60,000 would be infected. This now appears to be the case).
The health workers also said that a total of 2,971 people were reported to have died by Monday. The figure represents an increase of 102 deaths on the previous day. One person in every 20 who has contracted cholera in Zimbabwe is dying of the disease. The usual mortality rate is 1 in 100.
